Pamela’s Cheerful Flowers

2 May

Aerie at Eagle Landing wedding flowers

Pamelas bouquetsPamela's ceremonyThese colorful flowers make me happy! I had the honor of designing Pamela’s wedding flowers this past weekend, and I had a blast doing it. Pamela’s favorite flowers are lilies, so her bridal bouquet featured orange asiatic lilies,  Cherry Brandy roses, gerbera daisies, and spray roses, along with white hydrangeas and spray roses. Very cheerful! Her bridesmaids carried colorful bouquets in shades of orange and green with yellow accents. Flowers included gerbera daisies, carnations, spray roses, and pom flowers.

Pamela’s ceremony and reception took place at The Aeire at Eagle Landing in Happy Valley. The garden area is absolutely gorgeous! We designed colorful arrangements for the base of the arch to compliment the lovely pergola.

If you’re planning a wedding in Vancouver, WA or Portland, OR, I’d love to chat with you about your wedding flowers. Call me to set up your free consultation. 360-931-6561.

The Modern Cascading Bridal Bouquet

3 Feb

Hanging amaranthus bridal bouquet

Modern cascade bouquet featuring romantic garden roses, kale, orchids, sweet peas, lisianthus, tuberose, eucalyptus seeds, and renunculus. (Flowers by Snapdragon Studio)

Utter the word “cascading bride’s bouquet” and you’ll often be met with a cringe and frown from today’s brides. The term brings to mind the huge, stiff, unnatural -  and dare I say ugly? – bouquets of the 80s and 90s. Not at all what the modern bride wants to carry on her wedding day!

Today’s cascading bouquets are much more organic in look and composition. The cascading elements in the modern bouquet are created by the natural shape and lines of the flowers, rather than by forcing straight stems into a foam and plastic bouquet holder.

This sassy modern cascade bouquet features calla lilies, dahlias, popcorn hydrangea, freesia, fern curls, mini hydrangea, bear grass, and orchids. (Snapdragon Studio)

Some of my favorite flowers to use in a modern cascading bride’s bouquet are calla lilies, freesia, sweet peas, orchids (phalenopsis, dendrobium, cymbidum, or mokara), lisianthus, and garden roses. Seeded eucalyptus, bear grass, italian ruskus, and feathered eucalyptus are some of the greens I like to use to accentuate the shape of a cascade.

Sometimes a few trailing elements are all you need to add a bit of drama to your wedding bouquet. (Snapdragon Studio)

If you’re a modern bride looking to add a little drama to your wedding day, a cascading bouquet may be just the thing for you. I’d love to talk to you about your wedding flowers, call or email me today to set up a free consultation.

New year… new look.

18 Jan

As my first year as a “real florist” comes to a close, I can’t help but look back and reflect. I absolutely LOVED my summer packed with weddings. Of course there were some long days (and nights) of designing, several sleepless nights where I couldn’t stop thinking of flowers, and more than a few times of wondering what the heck I’d gotten myself into! But along the way I learned a LOT, refined my personal design style, and met some really amazing brides.

I am such a lucky woman. I have the opportunity to do something I really love, while still being able to spend most of my time with my two amazing little boys. I couldn’t ask for much  more!

As I began preparing for the 2010 wedding season, I realized that my logo just wasn’t working for me. I feel it doesn’t adequately represent my style or personality. Thus I began trying to design something a little more “me”. I think this new design better reflects my style and represents my business. I’d love to hear what you think about my new look!

Look for changes to my website in the next few weeks. I’m looking forward to freshening things up a bit!

And yes, you do see two versions of the logo. I just couldn’t decide which flowers to use, so I’m using several different illustrations. I  may settle on one… or I may just use different versions for different uses.
And that, my friends, is most definitely “me”.

Sweet Sarah

Sometimes I just connect with a bride… Sarah is one of those brides! She had a simply elegant vision for her wedding, and I really enjoyed being a part of her big day. jones-brides-bouq-2

Sarah loves simple garden flowers, and asked for carnations, gerbera daisies, mums, dahlias, and asters in her bouquet. Her colors were dark purple and orange. We accented her bouquet with touches of lime green and yellow.

Sarah’s bridesmaid’s wore dark purple dresses, so we made their bouquets in shades of orange, green, and yellow; featuring the same fower varieties as the bride’s bouquet. We also added green spider mums, a favorite of the bride’s sister and bridesmaid Lori. Sarah and Lori were such fun to work with, I really enjoyed getting to know them a bit.

The wedding and reception were held at the beautiful Fairgate Inn in Camas. I had the pleasure of working with their fabulous wedding coordinator Stacey Young. Not only is she a kick in the pants, she happens to be a great floral designer… visit her on the web at www.staceysflowers.vpweb.com.

jones-table-31 jones-centerpiece2Sarah chose low cube centerpieces for her reception tables. We used the same flowers as her bouquets, with the addition of sunflowers. No two tables were exactly alike! jones-brides-table1

The family table featured a larger focal centerpiece. You can’t tell in these photos, but all of the arrangements had submersed lights. Between the subtle glow of the vases and the votive candles on each table, the room became absolutely romantic at sundown!

I had the opportunity to work with Tony from Images by Floom Photography I can’t wait to see some of his images from Sarah’s wedding. I’ll be sure to share them when I can.

Huge thanks to Sarah for letting me design her flowers for her wedding. I had a blast…

Flowers for Sarah

1 Apr

I know it’s rainy and dreary right now, but Spring WILL come to the Northwest… it always does. For me, the real sign that Spring will soon show her face is the forsythia bush in my front yard. Just the other day I noticed yellow buds starting to emerge. Now the bush is bright yellow, bursting with happy flowering branches! I love it when I have a wedding or event booked during this time, so I can use those gorgeous branches in someone’s flower arrangement.

My friend Sarah had a birthday last week, and my sister and I threw a surprise party for her. This is the flower arrangement I made for her party. It’s full of daffodils, forsythia, calla lillies, renunculus, queen anne’s lace and wax flowers. I chose these flowers and colors because they remind me of Sarah… bright and cheerful!

I didn’t know it at the time, but it turns out daffodils  are Sarah’s favorite flower. I just love it when I make an arrangement for someone and they tell me it’s “them.” It really makes me feel good to know I captured someone’s personality through my flowers. Sarah had a great party, and I had a great time because SHE enjoyed her night…. and her flowers.

Like this arrangement?
This is an example of my small garden arrangement. Because this utilizes seasonal flowers, it’s super affordable… you can have an arrangement like this for about $58. (With premium and non-seasonal flowers, up to $99)

A bit about me…

26 Feb

p2230108

My name is Jennifer Fish, and I live and work in Vancouver, Washington. I’m the lone girl in a house full of boys (unless you count the dog Dune - our princess). I’ve been married to my best friend Joel for almost 6 years, and we have two little boys. Theo is 3 years old and Porter is 1.

I’ve been doing wedding flowers for about 10 years now. It started when my college roommate decided we were going to make her wedding bouquets. Even though neither of us had ever made a wedding bouquet. Ever before. Crazy, right?! We had a blast (and the flowers were gorgeous – if I do say so myself), and I haven’t stopped having fun yet! For years I did flowers for my girlfriends or people at church, then slowly I started getting referrals and doing more and more weddings. After losing my job in November, 2008, my husband gently pushed and prodded me to {finally} do this “for real”.

Now I have this fancy website and real business cards… so I guess it’s “for real”.

The bottom line is I love to create. I’m not a formally trained florist, although I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and have been working in the creative field for almost 20 years. {GASP… can I be that old?} I have 10 years experience with wedding flowers, all of it “on the job” training. Turns out I’m pretty darn good at it.

So now you know a bit about me. I look forward to learning a bit about you and your special event.

Smiles,
Jennifer
